The Enneagram

The Enneagram is a study of nine basic personalities. It can help us understand why we behave the way we do, as well as point the way to get past places we are stuck. It is a valuable tool for those who want to improve relationships with themselves and with others.

The origin of the Enneagram is unknown, but its roots go back many centuries. The Enneagram teaches that we learned to feel safe and to cope with life by developing one of nine strategies based on our natural talents and abilities.

As we develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and others through the Enneagram, we can move past the habitual (and sometimes destructive) patterns of our behavior. We can move past worn-out coping strategies, become less reactive to situations that trigger us and begin to see life from a broader point of view.

Karin and Tracy study the Enneagram both to enhance their work with clients, as well as for personal growth.

It is not necessary for our clients to be involved with the Enneagram, but for those of you who want to know more, read on. If you do type yourself, please let us know, we are interested.

What Is My Enneagram Type?

There are nine Enneagram "types." Each type has the same basic motivations and views the world in similar ways. As you learn about your type you will learn more about your gifts and positive qualities. You will also learn more about your self-defeating tendencies, blind spots, and ways to get yourself stuck.

It is often difficult to face ourselves with the level of honesty the Enneagram provides. Know that there is no one pattern that is better than any other. Each has fascinating positives, and equally fascinating negatives associated with it.

There are many online tests you can take to help determine your Enneagram type. Unfortunately, while they are interesting and can lead you in the right direction, they are often inaccurate.

The best way to determine your type is to read about each type and determine which one sounds the most like you (and it might actually be the type that makes you most uncomfortable as you are reading it).
