About Karin Kratina, PhD, RD, LD/N

Dr. Kratina, RD, LD/N is the director of Nutrition Therapy Associates in Gainesville, FL. She is a consultant, speaker and nutrition therapist who has specialized in the treatment of those with eating problems since 1983. Her education includes:

Her PhD research examined the unconscious thinking processes of women regarding food and body and how it impacts their behavior.

In 1990, she implemented and directed nutrition and exercise services at The Renfrew Center in Ft. Lauderdale, a health care facility devoted to the treatment of women with eating disorders. She worked with Renfrew for 12 years during which time she received extensive training in the field.  Prior to that, Dr. Kratina worked at two other facilities treating both women and men with eating disorders and compulsive eating issues.

She has been a leader in the field since 1992. She created the only practice group within the American Dietetic Association devoted to eating disorders and disordered eating. For three years she served as Chair of that organization (SCAN) and was the disordered eating editor of their newsletter, PULSE, for 10 years.

As an international speaker, Karin's primary focus is providing training workshops for professionals on the topics of eating, weight and body image issues, and eating disorders. She also regularly presents for the public. Workshops/Speaking lists examples of her talks.

Both of the books that Karin co-authored were recently released in their second editions. She has authored a number of book chapters (including the chapter on eating disorders for the Florida Dietetic Association’s diet manual) and articles, and is frequently quoted in the popular press in magazines such as Shape, Elle, Cosmopolitan, Runner’s World, Lifetime, and others. She has been appointed to advisory boards of the numerous organizations including the Clinical and Advisory Board of the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), and the Editorial Board, Journal of Health At Every Size.

Karin is currently the Clinical Advisor for Green Mountain at Fox Run (a retreat center for women specializing in eating and weight issues); and the Eating Disorders Nutrition Specialist at the Student Health Care Center at the University of Floridawhere she trains their dietitians to work with clients with eating disorders. She is also a national spokesperson for the Wheat Foods Council.

On a More Personal Note

Though Karin refuses to exercise (learn more about the nondiet approach to find out why), she is an avid mountain biker. Okay, well maybe it's really "trail riding" in Florida, but she also travels out west to ride. Her favorite mountain bike park outside of Florida is Deer Valley in Utah.

Logan

This is Logan, Karin's 10-year-old long-haired dachshund. She is a therapy dog of a sorts, and will greet you in the waiting room before your appointments with Karin. Then she will curl up on her bed during your appointment.
